    Essay Contest

    posted Wednesday, 1 March 2006

I'm pleased to announce that I've won an essay contest hosted by The Will to Exist milblog. The essay had to be 500-1000 words, and speak to the question “Why am I here?” It was restricted to military personnel currently serving in the Middle East.

You can click here to read the essay.

I’d like to thank Trevor, fellow milblogger and very capable purveyor of The Will to Exist for putting on the contest, and also those who donated the prize money.

It’s important to get the word out in a manner that doesn’t impede upon our roles as soldiers, undermine our leadership, or violate operational security (i.e. give the enemy anything he can use to his advantage). But I think it's important to share the stories the mass media is incapable of - they’re not soldiers. This essay contest was a great way of doing that.

Wow. I have been receiving a lot of positive feedback lately regarding this blog (an example is this… and this).  It really couldn’t have come at a better time. I’d been having “one of those weeks” for a couple of weeks now.

I often think about all of you out there in the vast panorama of life and love and war, and I ask God to bless you.

As always, I humbly thank you for reading. Please keep all of us soldiers in your thoughts and prayers. We're fighting hard and we need your support more than ever.

    Your servant,

    Lieutenant K

    Lieutenant K,

You are an American Patriot, Lieutenant K, and I salute you. From a personal standpoint I can say nothing that would be more meaningful.

As is always the case, it is beautifully written and I can certainly understand the win. In this case, however, it is the content which outshines even the very best example of your gift. I am not sure you mentioned the word honor, but it permeates the whole. I was weeping when I finished it, but rather than being sad, I was euphoric. As long as America has sons such as this, the nation will endure.

Congratulations! This essay is beautiful poignant personal and evocative.

Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and for sharing your thoughts, feelings, emotions, with all of us.

You put yourself on the line not merely when you serve, but when you open yourself in such an honest way. You are courageous both on the field and off.

I'm sorry about your divorce; yet, as one chapter of your life comes to an end, a new one begins.

    Stay safe.

Lt. K, This was an excellant essay. I think it clearly personifies what our troops are all about and the character of our young men and women in our Armed Forces..

Thank you for telling our young people and those around the world how important it is to safe guard freedom. But thank you also for telling them that war is to be avoided whenever possible.

Lastly, thank you fo telling them rights may be unalienable but as long as other people are not free, all people’s freedom is in jeopardy!

Thank you for your service and your willingness to share your journey in life at this moment in time. God Bless you and all our troops!
