    Happy Birthday Chloe !

    posted Tuesday, 4 April 2006

My daughter Chloe was born on this day in 2000. She's six years old today, and represents the new millenium's generation. I am so very proud to be her dad. I will never forget the day she came into the world. I was in college at the University of Montana, in Missoula. It was still cold out. The mountains were frosted with snow.  Missoula is a town of 30,000 only hours away from the Canadian border, and my wife and I were in a small, clean room in the Community Hospital there.

When labor hadn't really begun after 24 hours of waiting, we decided to go home and relax, since it was less than a ten minute drive away. Chloe didn’t want that. She stopped us in the parking lot.  As my wife stood at the passenger side door and I placed our bags in the trunk, her eyes got big, and she said “I think my water just broke.” We hurried back into the hospital and Chloe was born soon after. Her impact on my life has been the sweetest learning experience, and a source of constant gratitude and inspiration for me. When her little brother was born two years later, Chloe was as excited as we were. She’s such an intelligent and beautiful little girl.

At two minutes and three seconds after 1:00 in the morning, the time and date will be 01:02:03 04/05/06. Apparently this will never happen again. It’s such a perfect date, like a child learning numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. It’s in complete synchronicity with the the flow of time, and with Chloe's life. She was meant to be my child, of course, and I know that being her dad is one of the main reasons I exist. I missed her birthday last year, and now this one too, but she understands I think.

I love you so very much Chloe. Daddy will be home soon. Help your Mom take care of your little brother, okay? See you soon, and I promise I’ll be there next year.

    Happy Birthday

    Lieutenant K,

After every post you have always included a selected truth and today's is a very great wisdom. “There are many ways to measure success; not the least of which is the way your child describes you when talking to a friend.” -anon

People may garner vast wealth and renown, but a positive opinion about you from your child is worth more than any treasure bestowed by the world. It cannot be bought, or reqired, it must be earned.

A Dad who believes his greatest achievements are his children, in fact, his reason for being, has a rare love and a true and centered concept of purpose.

Happy birthday, Chloe Irene Kelley. And Happy Birthday for next year with your Daddy home for the celebration.

Lt K, you have a beautiful daughter...happy birthday Chloe. And it's true, children are the most precious gift that God can give someone, and they are to be treasured as a gift. I've been an editor/photographer for 6 years now, and I love my job and the people I work with. But when people ask me what I did before that, I proudly tell them that I loved and raised 3 sons. As far as I'm concerned, that's the most important thing I've ever done or ever will do. Now, they're all grown...the oldest lives nearby and works in wireless Internet; the middle one has been in the Air Force for 8 years and is currently stationed in Alaska; and my youngest is over there with you - Army. I couldn't be anymore proud of them. I can tell by the way you talk about your children that you feel the same way...cherish every moment you have with them. Be safe...
